The Vermont Educational Loan Repayment Program for Healthcare Professionals is funded by federal and state funds, and is administered by the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program.  The purpose of the loan repayment program is to increase access to primary healthcare in under served communities and to address the health professional shortages that cause disparities in access to health care in Vermont.

In 2017, Southern Vermont AHEC awarded $162,055 in retention awards to 16 physicians, physician assistants and advanced practice nurses.  An additional $30,000 was awarded to recruit practitioners to practices in the Southern Vermont AHEC region.  Employers committed $175,000 in educational loan repayment matching funds.
